雅各一家搬到埃及以后便在那里繁衍后代。埃及的法老王懼怕有一天以色列人的數量會超過埃及人,他便奴役以色列人去做燒磚和耕作之類的苦力。為了讓他們勞動得更困難,他還命令奴隸主不要提供燒磚用的稻草給以色列人。這樣,以色列人燒磚前只能自己去收集稻草,但他們要做的工卻一點也沒有減少。
