由来と応用

医学研究ではしばしば、陽気な心は、患者の、特にがん患者の回復を速めるという結果が示されてきた。この言葉は聖書を読む者にとっては新しいことではない。なぜなら、箴言の中で、いつもそう言われてきたからである。「喜びを抱く心はからだを養うが、霊が沈みこんでいると骨まで枯れる。」

この一節は、患者ケアの文献においてよく用いられる。病院牧師としての私の業務のなかで、患者さんたちが、人生の最も沈んだ時期にこの一節を読むことによって、しばしば大いなる慰めと励ましを見出すのである。
