وضعوا الإسرائيليون في المشقة في أرض مصر، حيث عملوا كعبيد. ادراكاً لمشقاتهم، ضرب الله أرض مصر مع وباء من أنواع مختلفة على أمل أن فرعون سوف يطلق إسرائيل. لكن قلب فرعون كان صلبا كالمعدن. وكملاذ أخير، ضرب الله البكر من كل أسرة مصرية خلال عيد الفصح. من أجل التمييز بين الأسر الإسرائيلية من المصريين، وطلب الله منهم أن يضعوا دم الخروف على أعتاب بيوتهم، حتى تنجو أسرهم من الطاعون. ومع رؤية أن كل البكر في مصر قد قتل، لم يكن أمام فرعونو خيار سوى إرسال الإسرائيليين إلى خارج البلاد. كان الإسرائيليون أخيرا احرار من المصريين، وغادروا البلاد كلهم.
