예수께서 이르시되 손에 쟁기를 잡고 뒤를 돌아보는 자는 하나님의 나라에 합당하지 아니하니라 하시니라.

만약 쟁기를 든 채로 뒤를 돌아본다면, 그것은 다시 한번 더 고민을 해 본다는 의미입니다. 이 성경 구절에서 파생된 또 다른 이디엄은, “쟁기를 쥐다”는 고된 일을 시작한다는 의미이기도 합니다.

기원과 적용

쟁기질을 할 때에는 반드시 주의 깊게 앞을 살펴야만 합니다. 뒤를 돌아봐서는 안되지요. 그렇지 않으면 고랑이 구부러지게 됩니다. 예수님께서는 예수 그리스도를 따르기를 망설이는 자들을 이것에 비유하여 말씀하십니다. 예수님의 부름에 바로 응답하지 못 한 사람들은 하나님을 섬기기에는 적절하지 않다고 여겨졌습니다.
