기원과 적용

비록 성경에 사과라고 분명히 명시 되어있지 않지만, 사과는 창세기에 금단의 과일로 종종 여겨집니다. 중세후기로부터 많은 그림들과 문학에서는 사과를 금단의 과일로 표현해왔습니다. John Milton은 In Paradise Lost에서 “이 세상에서 우리가 아는 선과 악은 불리되지 않은 채 함께 공존했다. 이것은 사과하나의 껍질을 맛본것에서부터 시작되었고, 두 쌍둥이가 벽개되는 것 같이 선악을 아는 지식은 세상으로 뛰어나왔다.” 그러나 성경에는 그 과일의 종류에 대해 구체적으로 명시되지 않았습니다.
