하나님께서 아담을 창조하셨을 때 아담은 어떤 동반자도 없이 혼자 지냈습니다. 간략하게 설명하자면, 아담이 태어난 이후에, 하나님께서 아담을 깊게 잠들게 하시고 아담의 갈비뼈로 여성을 창조하셨습니다. 아담은 그녀를 “살아있는” 이란 뜻의 “이브”라고 이름 지었습니다. 이브는 모든 살아있는 것의 어머니이기 때문에 그렇게 이름지어 졌습니다. C.S.루이스에 의해 쓰여진 나니아 연대기에서 이브의 딸은 이브가 창조된 이후에 태어난 일반적인 여성들을 표현하는 말로 쓰였습니다.
