기원과 적용

“helpmate”는 아마도 성경구절에서 유래된 말 같습니다. 하나님께서 아담이 혼자있는 것을 보셨기 때문에 이브를 아담의 좋은 동반자로 창조하셨습니다. 어떤 영어 성경은 히브리어인 עֵזֶר (’ezer)를“helper”로써 번역했고, 어떤 이들은 “companion” 동반자로써 번역했습니다 왜냐하면 히브리어는 여러가지 함축적 의미가 있기 때문입니다. 히브리어의 문자 그대로의 의미는 “남편에게 맞서는 배우자”입니다. 히브리어는 종속된 역할을 제안하지는 않지만, 영어로 “helper”는 이 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 오늘날의 상황에서, 배우자라는 단어는 소중하고 필수적인 사람을 좀 더 적절하게 해석한 말입니다.
