“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.” “여호와께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면 세우는 자의 수고가 헛되며 여호와께서 성을 지키지 아니하시면 파숫군의 경성함이 허사로다.”

헛된 수고는 얻는 것 없이 어떤 일을 하는 것을 의미합니다.

기원과 적용

시편의 이 인용구는 크리스챤들에게 유명한 말입니다. 이 사편 말씀은 사람들에게 자신의 뜻대로 삶을 살아가는 것 보다 모든 시선과 집중을 하나님께 두도록 가르치고 있습니다. 하나님의 축복이 없으면 아무것도 아닙니다. 여기서 “house”와 “city”는 은유입니다. 성경 주석자들은 일반적으로 이 두개의 은유를 “family”로 언급하고 있습니다. 이것은 오직 하나님의 축복을 의지하는 것이 가정을 안전하고 풍요롭게 유지 할 수 있다는 의미입니다.
