“For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men.” “내가 생각건대 하나님이 사도인 우리를 죽이기로 작정한 자같이 미말에 두셨으매 우리는 세계 곧 천사와 사람에게 구경거리가 되었노라.”

구경거리가 된다는 말은 대중 앞에서 어리석게 행동하는 것처럼 내 자신을 바보처럼 만들어 버린 상태를 말합니다.

기원과 적용

그리스의 수도인 고린도의 교회에 보낸 편지에서, 사도바울은 크리스챤들이 세상에서 고난받는 것을 그대로 보여줬다고 말합니다. 크리스챤들은 구경꾼들이 모인 로마의 대중극장에서 공공연하게 처형당하는 죄수들같이 비유되었습니다. 초기 기독교 사회에서 많은 크리스챤들이 로마의 대중극장에서 처형되었습니다.
