“그가 웃을 것이다”란 의미인 히브리어 יִצְחָק (Yitzchaq)에서 유래되었습니다. 구약성경에서 아브라함이 100세 일 때 그리고 사라가 90세 일 때 이삭은 태어났습니다. 하나님의 전령들이 그녀에게 그녀의 많은 나이에 상관없이 그녀가 임신을 할 것이라고 말할 때 그녀가 웃습니다. 이때문에 이삭이란 이름이 지어졌습니다. 창세기에 하나님은 이삭을 제물로 바치라고 명령하심으로 아브라함의 믿음을 시험합니다. 아브라함은 순종했고 아브라함이 이삭에게 칼을 내리치려는 그 순간 하나님의 천사가 막았습니다. 이삭이 40세 때 리브가와 결혼했고, 20년 후에 쌍둥이인 에서와 야곱이 태어납니다. 영국인 물리학자 “Isaac Newton”은 동명으로 유명합니다. 모든 것이 장엄하게 창조되기 전에 하나님의 존재에 대해 부인하지 않았던 견해를 그는 가졌습니다.
