창세기 25:19

“대체자” 그리고 “발 뒤꿈치를 잡은 자”란 의미인 히브리어 יַעֲקֹב (Ya’aqov)에서 유래되었습니다. 야곱은 이삭과 리브가의 아들이 였습니다. 그가 태어났을 때, 그는 그의 쌍둥이 형인 에서의 발 뒷꿈치를 잡고 나와서 그의 이름이 야곱으로 지어졌습니다. 구약성경의 이야기에서, 야곱은 에서의 장자 권을 바꾸는 명분으로 렌즈 콩 죽을 에서 에게 줍니다. 그런 다음, 축복을 받기 위해 에서처럼 변장한 후 이삭을 속였는데, 이 때문에 그의 이름이 “대체자”란 의미도 수반합니다. 천사와 씨름한 후에 그가 하나님과 그리고 남자들과 겨루어서 이겼기 때문에 하나님은 그의 이름을 이스라엘로 바뀌주십니다. 후에 그의 12명의 아들들은 이스라엘의 12부족이 됩니다.
