“하나님이 자유 하신다” 또는 “하나님이 높이신다”란 뜻을 지닌 히브리어 יִרְמְיָהוּ (Yirmiyahu)에서 유래된 예레미야의 중세영어 유형의 이름입니다. 예레미야는 바벨로니아인들이 예루살렘을 침입할 것이라고 예언했던 구약시대의 선지자입니다. 지도자들에게 신뢰를 얻지 못하여, 그는 감옥에 들어가게 되었고 후에 바벨로니안들이 그 도시를 점령했을 때 감옥에서 놓이게 됩니다. 바벨로니아 사람들은 그를 매우 친절히 대해줬고 심지어 그가 거주할 땅도 뜻대로 정하도록 해줍니다. 예레미야는 예레미야서의 저자이고 또한 전통적으로 예레미야 애가를 썼다고 전해집니다.
