우리는 어떠한 일을 하고자 하지만 질병이나 다른 방해되는 요소들 때문에 하지 못할 때 마음은 굴뚝 같지만 육체는 약하다”라는 표현을 씁니다.

기원과 적용

마가복음 14:38에 이 표현이 쓰였을 때, 약함은 신체적 약함 뿐만 아니라 영적인 연약함도 포함되어 있다고 언급하고 있습니다. 예수님이 체포되기 바로 적전 기도하실 때에, 제자인 베드로는 예수님께서 잠들지 말고 깨어있으라고 하셨음에도 불구하고 잠이 들고 맙니다. 예수님께서 기도를 마치시고 베드로에게 돌아왔을 때 그가 잠들어 있는 것을 보시고는 “시험에 들지 않게 깨어 있어 기도하라 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하도다”라고 하셨습니다. 확실히 사람의 육체는 약합니다. 며칠이 지난 후에, 예수님께서 체포되시고 베드로는 세 번이나 예수님을 부인하고 로마 병사들에게서 도망치게 됩니다.
