눈에 가시/ 육체의 가시란 문제를 일으키거나 어려움을 주는 사람이나 사건을 뜻합니다.

기원과 적용

사도 바울은 다마스쿠스로 가는 길에서 예수님께서 직접 나타나심으로 회심하여 그리스도인이 됩니다. 신앙심이 아주 깊고 헌신적인 기독교인이었던 바울은 육체적인 고통으로 인해 그의 일생 동안 고통을 겪었습니다. 세 번 정도 그는 고통을 없애주시기를 간구했고, 하나님께서는 “너를 향한 내 은혜는 이미 충분하다. 네가 나약할 때 내 힘은 완전해진다.”라는 대답을 주셨습니다. 바울은 고통에 대해 기뻐하게 되었습니다. 왜냐하면 나약함과 어려움 가운데서 하나님의 힘과 능력을 직면할 수 있었기 때문이었습니다. 이런 이유로 그는 “내가 약할 때, 나는 강하다.”라는 유명한 말을 하게 되지요.
