회 칠한 무덤은 위선자를 뜻합니다.

기원과 적용

예수님께서는 바리새인과 율법학자들을 “회 칠한 무덤”에 비유하여 비판하셨습니다. 회 칠한 무덤이란 표백한 무덤을 뜻합니다. 그것들의 겉모습은 아름답고 꽃과 비석으로 장식되어 있지만, 그 안은 아주 추악한 것들로 가득합니다. 그 당시에, 바리새인과 율법학자들은 아주 존경 받았습니다. 그들은 항상 성경 말씀이 적힌 띠를 이마와 팔에 두르고 다녔습니다. 그러나 정작 그들은 그들이 설교하는 내용들을 실행하지 않았으며, 사악하고 타락한 생각을 가지고 살아갔습니다. 예수님께서는 그들의 위선에 마땅한 심판을 받으리라고 말씀하셨습니다.
