先知以利亚為主熱心,但他时而会遭受挫折。他受以色列王后耶洗别迫害,惧怕地躲到了山洞里过夜。耶和华找到他后,叫他出来站在山上等耶和华经过。于是,以利亚站在山上:烈风大作,崩山碎石,耶和华却不在风中;风后地震,耶和华却不在其中;震后有火,耶和华也不在火中。火后,传来耶和华微弱的声音:“以利亚阿,你在这里做什么。”(列王记上-合和本) 这章的作者告诉我们,当我们在寻求耶和华的指引时,他不一定会在闪电或我们料想的大事件中出现,反而会在我们耳边低语呢喃,那往往是耶和华的小声指引。
