多马是追随耶稣的十二个门徒中的其中一位。当耶稣从死里复活中并出现在他的门徒当中时，多马并没有和他们在一起。因为他对于耶稣的复活表示怀疑，多马对其他门徒说：“我非看見他手上的釘痕、用指頭探入那釘痕、又用手探入他的肋旁、否则我不相信。” 八天以后，当耶稣又一次到来时，多马跟大家在一起。耶稣请多马触摸他的肋旁，不要怀疑，只要信。最后，多马终于相信了。
