雅各一家搬到埃及以后便在那里繁衍后代。埃及的法老王惧怕有一天以色列人的数量会超过埃及人,他便奴役以色列人去做烧砖和耕作之类的苦力。为了让他们劳动得更困难,他还命令奴隶主不要提供烧砖用的稻草给以色列人。这样,以色列人烧砖前只能自己去收集稻草,但他们要做的工却一点也没有减少。
