源自希腊语Πετρος (Petros),意为“石头”(有称“小石"),据新约記載,彼得原名西门,是一名漁夫。 被耶稣选中为其中一位十二门徒后,他改名为彼得。耶稣被犹太人捉拿後,因为害怕被捉,彼得曾经三次不肯承认与耶稣的关系。 为此,彼得之后非常后悔,其後獻身传揚福音。彼得在尼禄王统治下,他对行刑者要求把他倒过来挂在十字架上,因为他自觉与耶稣不配。
