「誠実な」や「忠実な」という美徳を表すヘブル語「犬」に由来する。旧約では、カレブはモーセがカナンの地を探りに行かせた１２人のスパイの１人である。　モーセがエジプトから導き出したイスラエル人の中で、カレブとヨシュアだけが、心から主に従ったため、約束の地カナンをみることができた。
