“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.” (Proverbs 16:18-19)

origin and application

Many a time we learn from history that pride leads to failure. In Biblical accounts, kings who leaned on their own ways were doomed to failure, an example would be King Saul, who failed in the war against Philistines. This idiom rings true from the past to the present.
