meaning
A Doubting Thomas is someone who doubts.
origin and application
Thomas was one of the twelve apostles who followed Jesus. When Jesus rose from his death and appeared before the apostles, Thomas was not with them. Doubting Jesus’ resurrection, he said to them, “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Eight days later, Jesus came again, and Thomas was with them. Jesus asked Thomas to touch him and stop doubting. This time, Thomas finally believed.
