意味

その人の傷を包む、とはその人の身体的、または内面的な痛みや悲しみを癒す事。

起源と適用

この節は詩篇の称賛から用いられています。筆者が自らの罪により傷ついた人々を癒し平安をお与えになる主への称賛を捧げています。

傷を包むとは辛い経験に向かい合わない様に試みる、と言う意味になります。これに関連して、もっともよく知られているこの慣用句の引用の一つにアメリカ大統領エイブラハム・リンカンによって言われた「国民の傷を包む」と言う慣用句があります。エイブラハム・リンカンは自身の大統領就任式でこう言いました。「誰に対しても悪意を持たず、すべての人に慈愛を持ち、神が私達に示された正義の様に正義を不動のものとし、 私達が携わっている課題が成し遂げられる様に努力しようではありませんか。国民の傷を包み、戦争に従軍した人とそのやもめや孤児を助け、私達の間とそしてすべての国の間にそれが正しくそして永続する平和を建設し守るためにすべての努力をし様ではありませんか。」
