神のことばは生きていて、力があり、両刃の剣よりも鋭く、たましいと霊、関節と骨髄のわかれ目さえも刺し通し、心のいろいろな考えやはかりごとを判別することができます。

起源と適用

両刃の剣は起こりうる危険のための武器で、その刃の両側は切れている。もし適切な取り扱いをしなければ怪我をするかもしれない、それは相手を攻撃するのと同じくらい、自分も同じくらい傷付くことになる。使徒パウロによって書かれたヘブル人への手紙の中でパウロはこう述べている。「神の言葉はどの両刃の剣よりも鋭く、たましいと霊、関節と骨髄のわかれ目さえも刺し通し、心のいろいろな考えやはかりごとを判別することができる。」

今日では「両刃の剣」という言葉は良い面と悪い面の両方を持ち合わす事を表す比喩的な言葉として使われている。例えば、インターネットのような近代技術や抗生物質など。
