起源と適用

トーマスはイエスに付いて来た12人の弟子の内の一人です。イエスが死から蘇り、弟子達の前に現れた時、トーマスは他の弟子達と一緒ではありませんでした。イエスの復活への疑いでトーマスは他の弟子達に言いました。「私は、その手に釘の跡を見、私の指を釘のところに差し入れ、また私の手をそのわきに差し入れてみなければ、決して信じません。」と言いました。八日後にイエスは再び現れた時、トーマスは彼らと一緒にいました。イエスはトーマスに触れ疑う事をやめる様に言われた。この時、トーマスは終に信じたのでした。
