Saul サウル

意味：これは、「求める」とか「祈り求める」という意味のへブル語の名前שָׁאוּל (Sha’ul)に元を発してます。旧約聖書のサムエル記に述べられているように、サウルは預言者サムエルに油注ぎ（任命）をされた、イスラエル最初の王でした。サウルは嫉妬心からダビデを迫害するようになりました。ついには、ペリシテ人との闘いで自害し、のちに、ダビデがその王位を継ぐようになりました。

新約聖書では、パウロがキリスト教に回心する前、もともとサウルという名でした。
