モーセはイスラエルの民をエジプトから導くために神によって選ばれた預言者でした。彼は、紅海の近くに野営していたイスラエル人を追跡するために、軍を行かせたのです。神に指示されてモーセは、その杖を上げ、水を分けるために手を海の上に伸ばしました。イスラエル人は「水は、右と左に壁のようになった」」間の乾燥した土地の海を通過しました(出エジプト14:22)。エジプト人の兵士が紅海に到着したとき、モーセは手を海の上に伸ばしました。水は流れ戻り、エジプトの兵士を溺死させました。そのうちの一人も生き残らなかったのです。
