意味

「サバス安息日」とはヘブル語で休息の意味です。

起源と適用

「サバス」はヘブル語で休みのことです。天地創造のため、神はこの世を六日間で創られ、最後の日七日目は、なんの仕事もせずに休むために取っておかれました。ユダヤ人はこの日を安息日と名付け、この習慣は現代にまで残っています。イスラエルでは、安息日は金曜日の日没から土曜日の日没までで、アラブ人運転手のタクシー以外はすべての交通機関が休みになります。アラブ人の人たちはこの慣習を守る宗教的な義務がないからです。

そういうわけで、イスラエルに到着する観光客は安息日を避けるようによく言われます。タクシーを待つのに長時間かかるのを避けるためです。
