意味

何かから手を洗うとは、そのことについて一切責任を負わない、ということです。


起源と適用

イエスは敵に逮捕され、ピラト知事に引き渡され、キリストと名乗るイエスをどうするか群衆に尋ねました。彼らは皆、「彼を十字架につけろ」と叫びました。ピラトは騒動が始まっているのを見て、群衆の前で手を洗い、イエスの十字架刑の無実を宣言しました。
