기원과 적용

“Beatitudes” 산에서 예수님이 하셨던 유명한 설교에서, 예수님은 산 꼭대기에서 군중들을 향해 “또 눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로 갚으라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나, 나는 너희에게 이르노니 악한 자를 대적하지 말라. 누구든지 네 오른편 뺨을 치거든 왼편도 돌려 대라 (마태복음 5:38-39)” 라고 하셨습니다. 당신이 다른 쪽 뺨을 돌려댄다는 의미는 상대편이 당신을 공격하거나 상해를 입히더라도 당신이 겸손한 태도로 화를 내지 않으며 앙갚음을 하지 않는다는 것입니다. 나에게 해를 입힌 자를 용서하는 것은 다른 앙갖음이 올 것을 미리 방지하는 행위입니다. 그러나 앙갚음은 다른 복수나 앙갚음을 일으킵니다. 만약 당신이 다른 쪽 뺨을 돌려대면, 당신은 그 사람을 용서한다는 의미입니다.
