「男」を意味する、ギリシャ語の名前「Ανδρεας (Andreas)」に由来する。新約では、アンデレはシモンペテロの兄弟であった。彼らはともに漁師であったが、後に、人間をとる漁師にしてあげようと約束をした、イエスの最初の弟子となった。アンデレはX型の十字架で殉教をとげたと言われている。
