Later on his twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel. 旧约圣经也记载,雅各用红豆汤换了以扫的长子名分。之后,他趁父亲视力模糊,假扮自己为以扫,骗取了父亲对以撒的祝福。因此雅各也有“代替者”之意。
