meaning
origin and application
The last supper is the final meal Jesus had with his disciples before his death. During the supper, Jesus blessed the bread and wine, which represented his body and blood respectively. Since his death, this practice continues to the present-day churches in different names according to their denomination, such as “Eucharist” in Early churches, “Holy Communion” in Protestant churches or “Mass” in Roman Catholic Churches. The purpose of this practice is to commemorate Jesus’ death and to demonstrate unity among Christians.
The Last Supper is a masterpiece of Italian painter Leonardo Da Vinci. The mural, created in 1495-1498, is housed at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, a UNESCO World Heritage site visited by tourists worldwide who are drawn to see this famous painting.
