以色列人在埃及流放其間過著奴役的生涯。上帝顧念到他們的困境,就讓各種瘟疫臨到埃及地,藉此向埃及法老王施壓,把以色列人釋放。但是埃及法老硬著心腸,對以色列人的態度施豪沒有任何改變。上帝發怒了,決定向法老施以懲罰,在逾越節期間殺掉每個埃及家庭的頭生胎兒。為了把以色列家庭分別出來,上帝要求以色列人家將羊血涂在門框上,這樣他們就可以免遭瘟疫。當法老看見每個埃及家庭的頭生子女都無一幸免地遭受瘟疫之苦時,他只好容許以色列離開埃及,以換取其子民的安康。最后,以色列人獲得了自由,離開了埃及。
