在舊約時代,以色列人收割后把初熟的莊稼用以敬奉上帝,以求得庇佑。上帝對當時的先知亞倫許諾,說:“凡從他們地上所帶來給耶和華初熟之物也都要歸與你。你家中的潔凈人都可以吃All the land’s first fruits that they bring to the Lord will be yours. Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it”。(民數記18:13) 這個習語沿用至今,初熟之物意旨事情初見成果。
