Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Genesis 4:9) “耶和華對該隱說，你兄弟亞伯在哪裡？他說，我不知道，我豈是看守我兄弟 的嗎？”(創4:9)
現在，人們嘗試隱瞞事實或是逃避責任時，會說“Am I my brother’s keeper?”。Brother’s keeper則指某人的監護人。
亞當與夏娃誕下長子該隱，然后誕下亞伯。他門雖然同為亞當的孩子，但上帝更看重該隱的弟弟亞伯，因亞伯供奉的是烤炙的肥羊，而該隱供奉的只是水果。該隱妒忌亞伯，在田間殺了他。后來，上帝問該隱：「 你的兄弟亞伯在哪里？」該隱為了逃避責任，有技巧地反問道：“難道我是看顧弟弟的人嗎？(Am I my brother’s keeper?)”上帝其實早就知道是誰殺了亞伯——因上帝聽到了亞伯在地下發出的哭聲，并詛咒了亞伯被殺的那片土地。
