亞伯拉罕是希伯來文。根據舊約的記載，亞伯拉罕原名為“亞伯蘭”，意思是“崇高的父親”。相傳為希伯來人的始祖。因為耶和華立他做多國的父，就把他的名字改為“亞伯拉罕”，意思是“多國之父”。耶和華必使他的後裔繁多，國度從他而立,君王從他而出。耶和華令一百歲的亞伯拉罕和他九十歲的妻子撒拉生下第一個兒子以撒.因為以撒,亞伯拉罕成為了以色列之父。 (創世記22:2)耶和華為了試驗亞拉伯罕的信心，要他把自己的獨生子以撒獻為燔祭。亞伯拉罕遵從耶和華的命令，但在最後一刻, 耶和華派天使阻止了燔祭，挽救了以撒的生命。亞伯拉罕因此稱為信心之父。
