It is of Hebrew origin which carries the meaning of “help” or “aid”. In the Old Testament, Ezra was a prophet and also called a scribe, a priest and a teacher of the Law of God. He devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.
