撒母耳源自希伯來語שְׁמוּאֵל“被神垂聽”,其完整意思為”被上帝聽到的人”。聖經記載先知撒母耳的母親把他的降生看作是上帝對她的禱告的應允。據聖經舊約記載,撒母耳集先知,祭司與士師等三種職份於一身,故他將耶和華所默示的話傳遍各地(撒母耳記三章:20-21節)。 他領導以色列人進入君王時期,拯救以色列人脫離士師時代的危難絕望,繼而進入君主政制的平安興盛;他也是膏立以色列王-掃羅和大衛-的先知。
