挪亞是亞當和夏娃第三個兒子賽特的后代。在挪亞的時代,世上充滿了暴力和罪惡,但挪亞是個正直的義人,與上帝同行。一天,上帝顯現在挪亞面前,說:“因為地上滿了他們的強暴,我要把他們和地一併毀滅。”(創世記 6:13) 於是,上帝指派挪亞用歌斐木(柏樹)建造一只方舟,一只可以容納并供養所有種類的動物各一對的方舟。經過四十天的洪水,所有的人類都被毀滅了,僅剩下挪亞一家。對於常人來說,建造一只如此巨大的方舟實屬荒唐之事,但挪亞是一個滿有信心的人,他憑著堅定不移的信念,一心遵從上帝的旨意。 現在英語里有不少習語和方舟有關。out of the ark 是指一些已經過時的習俗或事物,因方舟是遠古所造的。如果一件物件went out with the ark,即已經過時,不在流行了。
