在舊約時代,不是任何人都可以進入會幕中的至圣所,只有那些被上帝選中的先知才有這樣的機會。如果先知進入至圣所,他需要進貢兩只山羊,一只作為自己贖罪的供物,另外一只用于代人受罪。代人受過的那只山羊能從死里逃脫,活生生地進貢到上帝跟前。先知將自己的兩只手按在代人受過的山羊的頭上,讓其承擔以色列人的一切罪過。隨后,先知必須將那只承載著他們的過失的山羊放逐到沙漠中。舊約中的替罪羊預表基督降臨,藉著基督的寶血救贖人的罪。 “Scapegoat”現在被賦予了另外一種含義。它不用來比喻人們能為自己的過失贖罪,而是代表一個擔起別人所犯的罪行的人。
