大衛的兒子所羅門國王在他統治初期行在神看為美的事。一天晚上,上帝在所羅門的夢中和他見面,對他說:“你可以要求任何你想要我給你的。”(《列王紀》第三章第五節)。所羅門并沒有要求財富,而是判斷是非的智慧。所以上帝賦予了他公平執法的偉大智慧。他的智慧表現在他的一個著名的裁決。兩個母親索求一個嬰兒的所有權,但是她們當中只有一個是孩子的親生母親。所羅門國王于是要求把嬰兒切成兩半分別給兩個母親。真正的母親就拼命地救兒子,寧愿將兒子給另一個女人,然而假的母親就堅持要切分。所羅門國王于是便裁定第一個求他不要殺嬰兒的母親是真的。這個聰明的裁決受到了以色列人民的歡迎和很高的尊敬。
