腰の帯を締めるということは、動きやすくなるため下半身の着物のはしを引き締めることである。これはローマ時代、イスラエル人、特に兵士たちがこのように行った。出エジプト記にまず記されている。過ぎ越しの日、神はエジプトのすべての人間、動物の初子を打たれ、イスラエルの民に与えた苦しみのために、エジプトを裁いた。神はイスラエルの民に、腰の帯を引き締め急いで食べ行きなさいと命じた。同じフレーズが、比ゆ的表現としてエペソ(6.14)に出てくる。パウロがあらゆる悪霊の策略に立ち向かうことのできるために、弟子たちに腰に心理の帯を締めるように命じた。


運動選手は来月のレースに向けて、腰の帯を引き締めている。
