예수께서는 적들에 의해 체포되시고 난 뒤에 당시 총독이었던 빌라도에게 넘겨지시게 됩니다. 빌라도는 스스로 그리스도라 칭하는 이 자를 어떻게 하길 바라는지 군중에게 물었습니다. 사람들은 그의 물음에 “십자가에 못 박으라”고 외쳤습니다. 폭동이 일어나고 있던 것을 본 빌라도는 사람들 앞에서 손을 씻으며 예수님에 대한 십자가 형벌에 스스로 아무런 책임이 없음을 공표했습니다.
