Light of the world (Matthew 5:14)

Picture description: Light
Picture copyright: V.

bible verse

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:13)

origin and application

The phrase comes from the sermon which Jesus delivered on Mount Beatitudes in front of a crowd. Just as a light should be put on a lampstand for it to shine through the house, so should men act out their good deeds in order to shine in the world. A light should not be hidden under a bowl, just as a city on a hill cannot be hidden.
