Jeremiah
meaning
This was a Medieval English form of Jeremiah which was derived from the Hebrew name יִרְמְיָהוּ (Yirmiyahu), meaning “God will set free” or “God will raise up”. Jeremiah was a prophet in the Old Testament who foretold the Babylonian invasion into Jerusalem. Distrusted by the rulers, he was cast into prison instead and was later released after the Babylonians had taken the city. The Babylonians treated him with kindness and even let him make his own choice of residence.
Jeremiah was the author of the Book of Jeremiah and traditionally believed to have written the Book of Lamentations as well.
