bible verse
“This, then, is how you should pray: ” ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
meaning
Bread is a metaphor that stands for provisions in the Bible. Daily bread means daily supplies or necessities, physical or spiritual.
origin and application
In the above verses, Jesus asks his disciples to count on God for our daily needs. Indeed, in the time of Exodus when the Israelites had no food in the desert after leaving Egypt, God rained down bread like morning dew from heaven for them.
This expression has been taken up as the title of a worldwide publication—Our Daily Bread available at www.rbc.org which publishes daily devotional materials online and in print to cater to the spiritual needs of people.
